Alycia Burton – Inspiring Lives Through Horses and Mentorship
September 16, 2025Goldrush – The Horse Who Changed Everything
Every great story has a hero, and for me, that hero has always been a golden palomino pinto named Classic Goldrush — or simply Goldrush. At 22 years old, he isn’t just a horse; he’s my partner, my teacher, and the one who showed the world what is possible when trust and connection replace fear and control.
A Rough Beginning
Goldrush wasn’t born into an easy life. He came from steep hill country in New Zealand, bred for rodeo, and labeled as difficult from the very start. He was gelded young, half-started, then left to his own devices. Like so many horses who fall through the cracks, Goldrush was misunderstood, written off, and given little chance to become anything more.
When I first met him, I saw beyond the problems others warned me about. Beneath the nerves and defiance was a spirit that simply needed to be heard. Goldrush wasn’t broken — he was waiting for someone willing to listen.
Building Trust
Our partnership didn’t happen overnight. It took years of patience, setbacks, and small victories. Instead of forcing him into submission, I focused on creating trust, respect, and understanding. Slowly, the walls came down. He began to meet me with curiosity instead of resistance, and together we started to build a bond unlike anything I’d known before.
Free Riding to Fame
That bond became the foundation for everything we went on to achieve. Goldrush and I began performing in public, not with saddles and bridles, but free riding — jumping incredible heights without the use of traditional tack. People thought it was impossible, even reckless, but to us, it was natural. I wasn’t controlling Goldrush; we were moving as one, partners in every sense of the word.
Videos of our performances spread across the internet, capturing the imagination of millions. What people saw wasn’t just spectacle — it was proof that connection could be stronger than control, and that trust could carry you further than force ever could.
More Than a Performer
Goldrush is so much more than the horse who made Free Riding famous. Now at 22 years old, he continues to defy expectations, carrying himself with the same fire and heart that made him unforgettable. He is living proof of second chances, a reminder that what looks “untrainable” or “too difficult” might just be misunderstood. His journey from unwanted to world-renowned mirrors the journeys of so many young people I now mentor — kids who feel like they’ve been written off, but who simply need someone to believe in them.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Today, Goldrush continues to inspire not only riders but anyone who has ever felt like giving up. He’s a symbol of resilience, hope, and transformation. Every retreat I run, every young person I mentor, carries a piece of his story — the idea that no matter your past, you can rise, shine, and live with purpose.
Goldrush isn’t just my horse. He’s my partner in changing lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire long after the last jump.
