An album dedicated to the break in and Journey with this mare…. where ever it may lead us π
Okay so I think I may have a slight colour obsession with golden horses…. !
This is my 5 year old mare Jazz who I recently flew in from New Zealand to join me in Australia. She is half warmblood half TB and is 16hh.
I came to Australia nearly 2 years ago to teach lessons for a few weeks and to cut a long story short I never went home. … #LoveAus!
I sold many of my young horses except a few…. Jazz was one of the ones I kept. It was a hard decision to know if I should invest the money and time to bring her over to join me in Australia because the flight is so expensive or to sell her on. Curiosity got the better of me and here she is!
While poor Goldrush is recovering from eye surgery right now for the next 6 weeks I am breaking her in and bringing her on.
She has had some pretty bad issues and to be honest I really did not know if I was going to be able to fix them.
She was rearing verticle any time she was afraid, striking with all four feet (Her back feet were very dangerous), leg and huge head shyness and trust issues. She NEVER use to have any problems but has clearly had some bad experiences which is heart breaking in itself π
I am so relieved that she has completely turned around and become the most amazing kind beautiful trusting horse. It has taken MANY repetitive calm quiet hours working with her restoring her trustand teaching her not to be over reactive over the past 3 weeks but it has certainly paid off….. now she cant get enough of people.
Its a sobering thought to know that one day Goldrush will not be here- we have been together 7 years. I have put off having another horse for a long time because to me nothing comes close to the enjoyment I have with him… but now I think it could be time to start having another young one along on the journey.
I do not know what the future holds for Jazz and I as a team and I have no expectations other then she is the best she can be and she is loved and looked after. For me she has to have the ability to jump the heights and also has to have the heart but either way I am so very proud of her.
Time will tell all π
I am still only riding Jazz bareback in a halter. As I do with all of my break ins and re- breaks who are spirited in nature I give them athletic work/jumping which is incorporated into their ground work. It gives them a healthy way of expressing themselves and using their body and boy do they love it. … Just like kids who hate sitting down at a desk to learn some horses don’t do well in small yards.

Fantastic work!! Thanks for share!
My horse has a lot of trust issues and over reacts all the time. You said you’ve been working with your young horse restoring her trust and teaching her not to be over reactiv.
How did you do that? Do you have some exercises you recommend me to do with her? π
